What words do people use to define themselves? When you are first getting to know someone, you list words to describe yourself. For instance you might use words like outgoing, nice, affectionate, artistic, ambitious, silly, sweet, etc. These simple words become what someone defines you as.
When someone asks you to describe yourself, they are asking to fill in that blank definition of who you are. They are looking for the perfect blend of words put into a bowl; to mix until ready to bake, and tada - its you! They are looking for an x-ray of you to see what you are made of.
What words do you use to fill in those blanks? Do they define you? Would you add some words you don't normally use depending on who is asking?
I'm sure you're thinking, how does this have anything to do with photography? As photographers we are always trying to capture the essence of what we are looking at. Be it a person, landscape, architecture, etc. we want to make sure we catch every single detail to create the perfect piece of artwork.
Behind the lens we are creators. We are using all the ingredients we are given to define our subject perfectly. If we're at a wedding, we are capturing the love or excitement. If we are photographing a newborn, we are making sure that the innocence and purity of new life shows in our work. THIS is how we create some of the most dynamic photographs.
To all my future clients - when I meet you for the first time, I would like to describe myself to you so you have a clear picture of the person I am. I can't wait to get to know you and define you in photographs.
